The Whelks Golf Society

In 1993 a decision was taken to form a White Ensign Lodge Golf Society (to be known as The Whelks). The Home Club was to be Abbey Park Golf Club in Redditch.

Whelks Tour At the first meeting in March 1994 some 16 members and friends met and Albert Gunter was selected as the 1st Captain with Ian Fothergill acting as Secretary/Treasurer.

As the newly formed Society settled down into a regular routine of 6 games between March and October there were those who felt that we should also enjoy a Golf Tour.

At this time Ian Fothergill owned a property in Brittany and so he and 3 other intrepid travellers, Albert “Sticks” Gunter, Peter “Tansy” Lees, Bob “The Guvnor” Sweeting and Ian “Fothers” Fothergill set out. 4 courses were played and thoroughly enjoyed and so, on their return, the WHELKS added a Golf Tour to their Agenda.

By this time, as well as the “Eclectic Shield” presented by the 1st Secretary/Treasurer, individual Members also presented various Trophies and the Society now has an excellent selection which are awarded to the Winners of each game at an Annual Presentation Dinner held in November.

Following 5 tours to France and with the onset of the economic problems, France became an expensive exercise and so our attention turned to The Manor/Ashbury Hotel, near Okehampton, which became the new venue.

Our “Home” Club is now located at Ombersley Golf Club and our first game of each season and our AGM is held there. At the AGM we agree on the Courses we are going to play during the year for example: Ombersley, Bromsgrove, The Vale, Evesham, Sapey, West Midlands, and returning to Ombersley or some other location for the Final Game. We also seek to hold a 3 Clubs and a Putter Competition in November.

The Society continues to move forward and we now have 17 Members and a number of Visitors who enjoy what we do. All games are Stableford except for May which is Strokeplay, off Full Handicap; but beware we have a very strict Handicapping system.

If you enjoy your golf and the company of an excellent group in a well- run Society and would like to come along for a game please contact Information Officer.
